PhD in Nursing Programs in 2026

Research doctorate for nurse scientists and faculty, not APRNs. Compare listed programs against a DNP before you apply.

Key takeaways

  • PhD: new evidence + dissertation. DNP: apply evidence + practice project.
  • Often funded. A PhD does not confer APRN licensure.

Who a nursing PhD is for

Apply to a PhD if you already hold an RN license and want a career that produces evidence: nurse scientist, principal investigator, or tenure-track faculty at a research university. The typical successful applicant brings more than clinical hours — a thesis, a publication, or paid time on a funded study — and can name a faculty member whose current grants match the question they want to spend four to six years answering.

Skip this pathway if the goal is to become a nurse practitioner, CRNA, or clinical director. Those roles are built from MSN and DNP curricula that include supervised practice hours and a certification exam. The PhD does not substitute for that training. Community-college and clinical faculty jobs sometimes hire DNP-prepared nurses; R1 and R2 tenure lines almost always expect the research doctorate. Know which institution type you are aiming at before you sit GRE-optional applications or write a research statement.

You do not always need an MSN first. BSN-to-PhD tracks fold master's-level methods coursework into the doctoral program so a bachelor's-prepared RN can enter research training without a second application cycle. MSN-to-PhD tracks are shorter on paper because the methods core is already done; they still turn on dissertation time, not credit counts.

Outcomes after the dissertation — not an APRN credential

The PhD ends in a dissertation defense: an original contribution to nursing knowledge that a faculty committee agrees is publishable. Graduates typically compete for NIH, AHRQ, or foundation funding, teach in research-intensive schools of nursing, or lead science in health systems and industry. Compensation in those roles is tied to rank, grants, and institution type — not to the APRN fee schedules that drive NP and CRNA pay.

That is the opposite of the DNP outcome. A DNP graduate is hired to apply evidence, run a practice or a unit, and often to sit an APRN certification exam. A PhD graduate is hired to generate the evidence those clinicians use. The DNP vs PhD comparison walks the career split in more depth; the short version for this hub is that ranking one doctorate "above" the other is a category error.

Funding, listed tuition, and how to read the table

Research doctorates are one of the few nursing pathways where full-time study is commonly funded. A typical package combines tuition remission with a research or teaching assistantship and a stipend, often for a fixed number of years and often tied to a faculty member's grant. Practice doctorates and master's entry programs are usually self-funded or employer-funded; do not import that assumption here.

The tuition column below is the school's published total — a sticker price. A funded student may pay a small fraction of it, or none of it, for the years the assistantship covers. Packages lapse. Ask each program what the current cohort actually receives, how many years are guaranteed, and what happens after year four if the dissertation is not done. A higher listed tuition at a school that remits it in full can cost less than a lower sticker price with no assistantship.

Accreditation, residency, and the research apprenticeship

Prefer programs housed in a nursing school with CCNE or ACEN programmatic accreditation, the same bar this directory uses on DNP and MSN listings. Accreditation here certifies the nursing unit, not a license. State boards of nursing do not issue a "PhD license." The degree does not change your RN scope of practice and does not replace APRN certification.

Coursework may be online or hybrid; the dissertation is not. Every serious program is a mentored research apprenticeship — regular advising, a committee, and usually some on-campus residency or intensive. Fully asynchronous PhDs with no in-person component are rare, and they are a poor fit if you need a well-funded lab around you. When you compare rows below, treat delivery type as a description of the coursework years, not of the dissertation.

PhD in Nursing Programs — 2026

Listed tuition is the school's published total. Because assistantships and tuition remission are common in research doctorates, what a funded student actually pays is often far lower — confirm the current funding package with each program.

What is a PhD in nursing?
A PhD in nursing is a research doctorate. It prepares nurse scientists to design and run original research, publish it, and compete for grant funding, and it is the standard credential for a tenure-track nursing faculty position. The degree culminates in a dissertation: an original contribution to nursing knowledge, defended before a faculty committee.
How is a PhD in nursing different from a DNP?
The DNP is a practice doctorate and the PhD is a research doctorate. A DNP applies existing evidence to improve care in a clinical or systems setting and finishes with a practice-improvement project; a PhD generates new evidence and finishes with a dissertation. DNP graduates typically practice or lead clinically; PhD graduates typically conduct research and teach. Neither is a higher-ranked version of the other — they answer different career questions.
How long does a nursing PhD take?
Full-time programs commonly run four to six years from a BSN and three to five years from a master's, with the spread depending on how long the dissertation takes rather than on coursework. Part-time enrollment is available at many schools and extends the timeline accordingly. BSN-to-PhD tracks fold master's-level coursework into the doctoral program instead of requiring a separate degree.
Do PhD in nursing programs offer funding?
Funded study is much more common in research doctorates than in practice doctorates. Many full-time PhD students receive some combination of tuition remission, a stipend, and a research or teaching assistantship, often tied to a faculty member's funded project. The amount and the number of years covered vary widely by school and by year, so treat any published tuition figure as a starting point and ask the program directly what its current cohort is funded at.
Do I need an MSN before a nursing PhD?
Not always. Many schools run BSN-to-PhD tracks that admit nurses straight from a bachelor's and build the master's-level content into the doctoral curriculum. Others require a master's for admission. Both routes require an active RN license, and competitive applicants usually bring research experience — a thesis, a publication, or work on a funded study — rather than only clinical hours.
Can you earn a nursing PhD online?
Partly. A number of programs deliver coursework online or in a hybrid format with periodic on-campus intensives, but the dissertation is a mentored research apprenticeship, so every program keeps a substantial advising relationship and most require some residency. Fully asynchronous nursing PhDs with no in-person component are rare.
Does a nursing PhD make you an APRN?
No. A PhD in nursing is not an advanced-practice credential and does not by itself authorize nurse practitioner, CNS, midwife, or CRNA practice. Those roles require an APRN-aligned graduate curriculum plus national certification and state APRN licensure — usually an MSN or DNP track, not a research doctorate. Some dual DNP/PhD or post-PhD APRN options exist; they are separate programs, not an implied benefit of the PhD.
What should I look for besides listed tuition?
Match your research question to a faculty member who is actually publishing and funded in that area, then ask how many years of tuition remission and stipend the current cohort receives, whether the assistantship is a 9-month or 12-month appointment, and what the median time-to-degree has been. A cheap sticker price with no mentor in your topic is a worse fit than a higher listed tuition that is fully remitted under a funded lab.
