Online MSN Programs in 2026

224 fully online Master of Science in Nursing programs across 104 schools — no relocation required. Coursework is delivered online; nurse practitioner tracks add supervised clinical hours arranged in your own community.

What "online MSN" actually means

  • Non-clinical tracks run fully online. Nurse educator, nursing administration, and informatics carry practicum hours usually completed at your current workplace.
  • NP tracks are online coursework plus 500–750 in-person clinical hours. Ask whether the school places you or expects you to find your own preceptor — this is the most common reason students stall.
  • Accreditation is the one non-negotiable. CCNE or ACEN, verified with the accreditor, determines certification eligibility and federal aid.

Online MSN Programs by Specialty (2026)

MSN specialty tracks differ far more than the shared degree name suggests — in clinical hour requirements, certification exam, and what the credential lets you do. These are the online tracks with enough accredited inventory to compare.

Online MSN FNP Programs

64 programs · Family Nurse Practitioner

The largest NP track by enrollment. Coursework covers primary care across the lifespan, and clinical hours are arranged locally, which is why the online format is the norm rather than the exception.

Showing 8 of 64 Family Nurse Practitioner programs. Tuition figures are from published program data — verify current pricing directly with each school.

Online MSN PMHNP Programs

46 programs · Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner

The fastest-growing prescriber specialty, driven by a national shortage of psychiatric providers. Telepsychiatry has made fully online coursework standard, and salary premiums are among the highest of any NP track.

Online MSN AGACNP Programs

4 programs · Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner

Prepares nurses for high-acuity inpatient practice in ICUs, emergency departments, and hospitalist teams. Programs expect prior acute-care RN experience and place clinical hours in hospital settings.

Online MSN Nurse Educator Programs

38 programs · Nurse Educator

Prepares nurses to teach in academic and clinical-staff development settings. The nurse faculty shortage is itself a documented cause of program waitlists, and this track requires no prescriptive practice hours, so it runs well fully online.

Online MSN Nursing Administration Programs

40 programs · Nursing Administration & Leadership

A non-clinical track covering health systems leadership, finance, quality, and operations. Coursework maps to nurse manager and director roles rather than to a certification exam.

Online MSN Nursing Informatics Programs

13 programs · Nursing Informatics

Sits between nursing practice and health IT — EHR optimization, clinical decision support, and data governance. One of the few nursing graduate tracks with no clinical placement requirement at all.

How clinical placement works in an online program

This is the practical difference between online MSN programs, and it is rarely on the tuition page. Some schools operate a placement office that secures your clinical site and preceptor; others provide a database and require you to arrange placement yourself, which in saturated metro areas can add a full term to your timeline.

Ask three questions before you enroll: does the school place students or do you, does it hold existing affiliation agreements in your state, and what happens to your progression if a placement falls through. Non-clinical tracks — educator, administration, informatics — largely sidestep this, which is part of why they finish faster.

Can you complete an MSN entirely online?
The coursework, yes. Every program listed here delivers its didactic content online, and for non-clinical tracks — nurse educator, nursing administration, nursing informatics — the practicum is frequently completed at your existing workplace, which makes those genuinely end-to-end online. Nurse practitioner tracks are different: they require 500 to 750 supervised clinical hours completed in person at an approved site. Those hours are arranged locally rather than on campus, so you do not relocate, but they are not online.
Are online MSN programs accredited?
The reputable ones are accredited by CCNE (Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education) or ACEN (Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing) — the same bodies that accredit campus programs. Delivery mode has no bearing on accreditation eligibility. This matters more than any other single factor: graduating from a non-accredited program can leave you ineligible to sit for national NP or APRN certification exams, and ineligible for most federal financial aid. Verify a program's status directly with the accreditor before you enroll, not just from the school's own marketing.
How much does an online MSN cost?
Across the 108 online MSN programs in our catalog that publish a total price, tuition runs from $9,720 to $86,000, with a median of $26,600. The 17 programs quoting a per-credit rate fall between $504 and $1,193 per credit. Public in-state programs cluster toward the bottom of that range and private and out-of-state programs toward the top. Online delivery does not automatically mean cheaper — some schools charge a single flat online rate that undercuts their own out-of-state tuition, while others add technology or distance-learning fees. Employer tuition reimbursement is common for nurses and is worth checking before you compare sticker prices.
How long does an online MSN take?
Published program lengths in our catalog run from 15 to 36 months, which brackets the usual split: full-time completion around 18 to 24 months, part-time — what most working nurses choose — toward the longer end and sometimes beyond it. Nurse practitioner tracks sit at the longer end because clinical hours cannot be compressed the way coursework can. Many online programs offer multiple start dates per year rather than a single fall admission, which can meaningfully shorten your time to starting even when the program length itself is the same.
Which online MSN specialty should you choose?
Choose by the role you want, since the specialty determines your certification and scope, and switching later usually means a post-master's certificate. Nurse practitioner tracks (FNP, PMHNP, AGACNP, AGPCNP) lead to prescriptive authority and the highest salaries, and require clinical hours. Nurse educator, nursing administration, and nursing informatics are non-clinical tracks — shorter, cheaper, no clinical placement to secure — leading to faculty, management, and health-IT roles respectively. PMHNP and nurse educator both address documented national shortages.
Will employers treat an online MSN differently?
No. Employers evaluate the credential, the accreditor, and your certification, not the delivery mode — and most diplomas do not state that the program was online. Online MSN graduates are hired into the same NP, faculty, and leadership roles as campus graduates. The distinction employers do make is between accredited and non-accredited programs, which is why accreditation is the item to verify rather than format.
