Admissions

Admissions at East Carolina University – College of Nursing

Competitive.

• The traditional BSN (pre-licensure) program is not direct-entry. Students start as "Intended Nursing" majors and apply to the clinical nursing portion once eligibility requirements are met. ECU admits up to 130 students each fall and spring—totaling up to 260 students per year.
• Minimum cumulative GPA required to apply to the traditional BSN program is 2.75 (calculated across all college coursework). However, this is not typically competitive—admitted students' average GPA is around 3.4 or higher.
• Required prerequisite courses must be completed with a final grade of C or higher: MATH 1065, CHEM 1120/1130, BIOL 2140/2141, BIOL 2150/2151, and BIOL 2110/2111.
• Admissions to the BSN clinical portion is competitive, based on total points earned via the College of Nursing ranking formula and overall cumulative GPA; no additional criteria influence admission.
• Applicants may apply a maximum of three times to the traditional BSN pathway. Those not admitted after three attempts are encouraged to consider alternate pathways (Accelerated BSN, RN to BSN, or aRIBN).
• ECU provides the BSN Admission Ranking Formula, showing how points are assigned for GPA and HESI A2 exam average:

Format

• Nurse‐Midwifery (MSN)
